Earthwool®
Earthwool® is a popular brand of glasswool (fibreglass) insulation manufactured by Knauf Insulation. It is widely used in residential and commercial buildings for thermal and acoustic insulation in walls, ceilings, and underfloors.
What sets Earthwool apart from traditional fibreglass insulation is its manufacturing process and eco-friendly profile. Here is a breakdown of what it is, how it works, and why it’s widely used.
Key features & technology
ECOSE® Technology: This is Earthwool’s main selling point. Instead of using harsh chemicals like phenol-formaldehyde or artificial dyes, Knauf uses a bio-based, formaldeyhde-free binder technology.
The "Brown" Insulation: Because it has no artificial dyes or bleaches, Earthwool is naturally brown, rather than the traditional pink, yellow, or green seen in other brands.
Recycled Materials: It is made using up to 80% recycled glass bottles and jars, which significantly reduces its environmental footprint.
Major benefits
Softer to Handle: Traditional fiberglass is notorious for being incredibly itchy and irritating to the skin. Earthwool is engineered to be much softer, less dusty, and significantly less itchy to handle and install.
Thermal Efficiency: It provides excellent thermal resistance (measured in R-values). By trapping millions of tiny air pockets within its structure, it slows down the transfer of heat, keeping buildings warmer in winter and cooler in summer.
Acoustic Performance: In addition to temperature control, Earthwool is highly effective at absorbing sound waves, making it great for reducing noise transfer between rooms or from the outside.
Fire Safety: Earthwool is naturally non-combustible and generally achieves the highest fire classification ratings (such as Euroclass A1 or local equivalent non-combustible standards), meaning it won't contribute to the spread of a fire.
